I am no longer able to connect USB hard drives to any guest. I have the them connected directly to the host, but when I try to connect it to a guest in vSphere it is not listed. I can see the USB devices when I do a lsusb in the shell. I have verified that the USB controller is installed on the guest. The machine would occasionally fail to boot (stuck at the blue and grey boot menu), and this issue became more frequent over time. Interestingly, opening up the laptop and reseating the SATA to M2 cable (I think M2 is the right name but I'm not sure) would miracoulsly solve the issue and allow the machine to boot, but not any more.
